What this DualSense test shows

The diagram is drawn after the DualSense, the standard PS5 controller. The DualSense Edge has the same face, so it works too (its back buttons arrive as copies of other buttons). The page reads the controller about 60 times per second:

  • ✕, ○, □, △, the D-pad, Create, Options and the PS button turn orange while pressed.
  • L1 and R1 light up along the shoulders, L2 and R2 fill from the bottom as you pull them.
  • The touchpad lights up when you click it, if your browser reports it.
  • Both sticks move inside their wells, with a line for direction and distance. L3 and R3 fill the stick cap.

Drift first

Drift is the fault DualSense owners report the most. Let go of both sticks and look at the diagram: the caps must stay centred and the plots below must stay inside the small dashed circle (0.10). A stick that wanders between 0.05 and 0.10 is starting to drift and usually still hidden by games. Above 0.10, your character or camera moves on its own. The stick drift test gives a precise figure and the deadzone that hides it.

Reading the result on a DualSense

What you seeWhat it means
L2 or R2 stops before 1.00Dirt under the trigger or a worn sensor. Check that the adaptive trigger effect is off in the PS5 settings, then test again.
L2 or R2 rests above 0.05The trigger does not return fully. It can trigger aim or acceleration on its own.
A face button lights twice per pressWorn contact (chatter). Common after heavy use of ✕.
A stick does not reach the outer circleLimited range: full tilt will feel slow. The joystick tester maps the whole edge.

USB or Bluetooth

Both show the same inputs. Bluetooth adds a few milliseconds and, on some PCs, short dropouts; if the diagram freezes over Bluetooth and not over a cable, the controller is fine. Over USB, use a data cable: many USB-C cables only charge.

What the browser cannot see

The PS5 talks to the DualSense with features browsers do not reach: adaptive trigger resistance, the voice coil haptics, the speaker, the microphone and its mute button, the gyroscope, finger position on the touchpad and the battery level. Chrome and Edge can play simple rumble on the haptic motors through the vibration test, but the feel is cruder than in a PS5 game. Have a PS4 controller? Use the PS4 controller tester.

Frequently asked questions

Can I test the adaptive triggers?

No. The resistance motors of the adaptive triggers are driven by PlayStation games through a protocol that browsers do not expose. This page shows how far each trigger travels (0.00 to 1.00), which is what wears out first.

Why does my DualSense drift so often?

The DualSense uses resistive potentiometers, like most controllers, and they wear with use and dust. Drift complaints on the DualSense are frequent enough to be the first thing to check. The drift test measures it at rest in 5 seconds.

Does the touchpad work in the test?

The touchpad click is shown when the browser reports it (button 17 in Chrome and Edge), and the pad lights up on the diagram. Finger position, the gyroscope, the microphone and the mute button are not available to web pages.

My DualSense is not detected on PC. What can I do?

Press the PS button once connected. Over Bluetooth, pair it by holding Create and PS until the light bar flashes. Close Steam if Steam Input is set to take over PlayStation controllers, then reload the page.
